ADOPT

Adopting a pet is one of the greatest gifts you can give, to the animal – and to yourself. Thank you for considering adoption from  Whatcom Humane Society.

Our interactive adoption process strives to place animals into permanent, responsible and loving homes. Our staff work with potential adopters to help choose the best match possible, both for the animal and the adopter. Prior to meeting an animal, potential adopters are asked to complete an adoption application to better help our staff understand what you are looking for in a companion animal. These applications remain on file for 6 months, so there is no need to complete an application each time you visit our domestic animal shelter. Adopters must complete an adoption application and be able to fulfill the adoption requirements necessary in order to be considered or approved for adoption.

Application forms for dogs and cats (Adobe Acrobat PDF files) may be downloaded below.

This is Twix! Twix has really come out of his shell since arriving at the shelter. He chirps with excitement every time he hears the food bag rustling. Fresh greens are Twix's favorite food, and he also loves a small piece of carrot every day! Daily handling has helped Twix become a social little pig, and will need continued handling to keep him this way. Fill out an application up at the front desk if you think Twix could be your new buddy.

  • Cockatiel
Cuddly, outgoing and comical are just three reasons why the cockatiel is the No. 1 pet bird in America. Cockatiels are also talented whistlers, and male cockatiels in particular are known for their whistle serenades, which can be directed at their favored person, their favorite object or their mirror reflection. When not whistling or keeping themselves busy foraging for food and fun around the cage, cockatiels often enjoy spending their downtime snuggling on their favored person’s shoulder. A healthy, well-socialized cockatiel can make a great family pet and is also ideal for apartment living.A cockatiel needs a cage spacious enough to accommodate multiple perches, toys, food bowls and have plenty of room to flap its wings without hitting them against anything. A cage with a large door front is ideal because it makes it easier to return a cockatiel to its cage, especially since cockatiels can be flighty birds. Cockatiels are natural ground foragers and will forage on the bottom of the cage if given the opportunity; cover the cage floor with newspaper and sprinkle crumbled treats or millet sprinkle seed for your cockatiel to find. Cockatiels are social birds and thrive when given opportunities to interact with you, whether it is gently petting their cheek feathers, being talked to or simply being in the same room as you.If you are interested in Summer the sweet cockatiel, please fill out an application at the front desk.

Say hello to a lovely gentleman named Sir. This respectful man is on the look out for a loving, responsible, and permanent home. Sir is a proper man who loves to gently lean on you and get well deserved attention. Since Sir is a respectful man he also asks that his boundaries be respected. Sir is a little head shy and gets nervous when leashes or harness go over his head. He would love it if everyone would take their time putting on harnesses and give him lots of treats and praise. Since Sir is head shy he would like his new home to have older children that understand how to take their time and read his body language. Sir can live with canine companions but would prefer another easy going gentleman or gentlewoman as his roommate. Sir can potentially live with a feline companion with proper and slow introductions. Sir doesn't know any basic commands and would love to be taught some. If this fine fellow would make a great addition to your family please fill out an application to meet with him at customer service.

Say hello to Ruby, the cutest collie around! This young lady came in as a stray so we don't know anything about her history. She may have lived a bit of a sheltered life previously, as she was very nervous when she first got here and seems a little undersocialized. But since her arrival, Ruby has really began to come out of her shell! She is a happy, bouncy girl who loves to run around in the sunshine. She doesn't have much in the way of leash manners, and she is just so excited to go for walks that she ends up running in circles around you. Ruby is a very smart girl who learns quickly, so with a little positive reinforcement and lots of treats, she should walk politely in no time! Ruby enjoys the company of other dogs, and would love to spend her days romping around with some canine buddies, whether in your home or out at doggy daycare! She might be able to live with a cat, but without knowing anything about her past, it's hard to say for sure. Ruby could probably live with respectful children that will be patient with her as she adjusts to her new home. Any kids in the house should have prior dog experience and be able to give Ruby her space, as she can still be a bit nervous in new situations. If you're in the market for a sweet, silly, playful pup to add some spice to your life, Ruby just might be your girl! Head on up to the front desk for an application to meet her!

Meet Kane! A super cute puppy looking for a responsible, loving and permanent home. Kane will need to be signed up for positive reward based classes before his adoption can be finalized. Kane lived with other dogs and would enjoy having another canine companion to show him the ropes. He will have to meet any potential house mates to ensure they will be a good match. Kane is not a fan of kids so an adult only home or a home with teenagers would be best. He hasn't lived with a cat so he might be okay with a confident cat. No cats would probably be best though. This boy is a high energy dog that needs a lot of physical and mental stimulation to keep him happy and healthy. We will be collecting applications and calling back the most appropriate homes to come in and meet him. **Adoption applications submitted for puppies under one year of age will initially be put on file for review only. Due to the large volume of interest in puppies available for adoption we do not facilitate same day introductions. Adoption applications for puppies will be collected for a 1-2 week period before being reviewed to find the best possible match based on the individual needs of the puppies that are available. Adoption applications selected to meet with an available puppy will be contacted directly by Whatcom Humane Society adoption counselors and an introduction time will be set up. Adoption applications may be submitted in person, via fax (360) 733-4746, or via e-mail at adoptions@whatcomhumane.org. If you have not been contacted by staff after submitting an adoption application for a puppy, or if you have questions about what stage of the review process a certain puppy is in, please contact the customer service department by calling (360) 733-2080 ext 3001 or e-mailing adoptions@whatcomhumane.org. All puppies are required to be signed up to attend positive, reward based obedience classes before the adoption can be finalized.**

Meet Hope! A fantastic pup looking for a responsible, loving and permanent home. Hope is very affectionate and playful. She is a high energy dog that will need somebody that can provide plenty of physical and mental stimulation. When Hope first arrived at the shelter she was terrified and managed to escape. She gave the staff quite a work out trying to recover her. Once she saw that we weren't so scary she has been a cuddle bug. She is cautious around new people so children in the home should be 12 and older and have experience with dogs. She seems to enjoy playing with other dogs and would benefit from having a canine companion in her new home. Since her history is a mystery we aren't sure if she's been around cats before so maybe a confident cat may be alright. Hope would also benefit from positive reward based classes but it isn't mandatory. If you are interested in meeting hope, please fill out an application at the front desk.

Esther will need a breed experienced home. She is strong, jumpy and would do best in an adult only home. She shows prey drive so a home with no cats or small critters would be best. Esther does not know how to behave around other dogs and tends to show leash reactivity. She would not be a dog park candidate but she would love to go on long hikes and runs with her person. Esther came in looking rather grungy and now that she is on a high quality, grain free diet her skin has started to look better. Esther is a loving and affectionate girl but she will be a bit of a project dog so she won't be the best dog for a 1st time owner. • Hamster
When adopting a hamster you need to purchase a cage at least 15 inches long by 12 inches high, but opt for something larger if you can to give your hamster more room to exercise and explore. Make sure the cage is also escape-proof. Bedding: as a general rule, the best and healthiest type of bedding is one that isn't made of wood shavings. Try to find bedding made from cellulose or plant-based paper fibers and avoid cat litter, corn cobs, newspaper and any scented bedding (which contains chemicals that can cause respiratory trouble). Toys: an exercise wheel is a must to prevent boredom, and you can also purchase a ball for your hamster to run around a room in under your supervision. Food: you can buy bags of hamster mix, which will generally have a blend of fruits, vegetables and seeds and grains, but you'd do well to also give your hamster small pieces of fresh vegetables and fruit. You’ll also want to give your hamster access to fresh water at all times. Please fill out and application to meet Eddie and the Cruisers.

Meet Winnie, a great kitty with a bit of a sassy side. Winnie takes a little longer to adjust to new environments, and would prefer a home that can go slow and take their time with her. Winnie is an active girl who likes to zoom around the room and check out what's going on outside the window. She'll be a great guard kitty should any birds get too close to the house! Winnie tends to be more independent-- she prefers affection on her terms and will let you know if now is not the time. She may not be a lap cat, but she'll definitely sit just out of arm's reach from you on the couch! Because Winnie can be so sensitive, her ideal home will be adult only. She might be able to live with another cat, or a dog who will leave her alone. If Winnie sounds like the girl for you, head up to the front desk for an application to meet her!

This sweet guy is Sylvester and he is looking for a responsible, loving and permanent home. Sylvester has feline immunodeficiency virus. This just means that his immune system is compromised. Cats infected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) may not show symptoms until years after the initial infection occurred. Although the virus is slow-acting, a cat's immune system is severely weakened once the disease takes hold. This makes the cat susceptible to various secondary infections. Sylvester will need to be an INDOOR ONLY cat. He will also need to be the only cat in his new home. FIV is not contagious to humans or canines. Sylvester is a very lovely boy but a bit timid and would probably do best in an adult only home or a home with older teenagers. Cats with FIV can live completely normal lives but you must be aware of any potential illness as they can't fight it off as easily as a cat with normal immune system. Sylvester will need regular brushing so his long fur doesn't become matted. He loves to cuddle and enjoys getting love from his people. If you are interested in meeting Sylvester, please fill out an application at the front desk.

Do you love snugly cats? Want a cat that would love to lay in your lap and get love? Look no further!!!! Say hello to Pogo. This incredibly sweet boy is looking for a loving permanent home. Pogo is a very affectionate cat in need of a home that can provide him will all the attention his heart desires. Be careful with any task you are working on he might want to come investigate and let you know he needs more head scratches. Pogo came in to us as a stray with several wounds on his hind and a little tip of his ear missing. We think Pogo might have gotten into some scraps with other cats so he will need an easy going cat in his new home that won't pick on him. We don't know if Pogo has been around dogs but we think he could potentially live with a calm dog that won't chase him. Since Pogo did have some battle scars we think a very responsible indoor/outdoor home will be best; potentially only supervised outdoor time. If this love bug sounds like a good fit for your family please fill out an application to meet with him at customer service.

  • Ferret
Meet Murray the ferret! Ferrets live for 6 to 13 years and during that time they will require regular vaccinations and veterinary check ups to remain in tip top shape. In particular, Ferrets are at risk of fleas and heartworm, so monthly preventative treatments like Advocate (for kittens) should be used. They are also at risk of canine distemper, and annual vaccination can prevent this. Ferrets are highly intelligent and social pets that do best in small groups. It is highly recommended you consider adopting a pair of ferrets so they will always have a companion to socialize with. Ferrets natural play includes nipping and training is required to ensure your ferret knows that nipping humans is not an acceptable behavior. They are also extremely inquisitive, anything you may have in your home IS of interest, so ferret proofing your home is must so they do not get caught in between, underneath or behind things.are usually designed with two levels and a place to hang a cozy hammock. The cage should also contain a dark enclosure such as a wooden hut, where the ferrets can make a nest for sleeping. Towels and similar fabrics make good bedding. The bedding will need to be washed frequently, and the cage itself will need regular scrubbing.Your ferret needs several litter boxes: one for the cage and several for playtime outside the cage. The best litters to use are shredded paper and newspaper-based cat litters. If you are interested in adopting Murray, please fill out an application at the front desk.

Hello, I'm Snow and I'm a shy girl who loves to explore my surroundings. I need someone who is willing to go slow with me at first. I would love a home who can commit to providing me with lots of time out of my cage to run around so I can get my daily exercise. I hope that my new home commits to caring for me for my whole life! I will need a roomy cage that is cleaned regularly. Rabbits require timothy hay daily or some other type of grass hay like orchard grass. They also need fresh greens daily. This hefty lady is Tug and she's looking for her next workout buddy! Tug had a bit of a tough time sticking to her New Year's Resolution of losing some weight, and is ready to get back on the wagon. She would like a high quality, low calorie diet, and lots of extra play time to help shed some pounds. At her current size, Tug's quality of life is being negatively impacted-- her joints are stressed, she can't quite make it all the way around her body to groom herself properly, and at times it can be difficult for her to use the litter box (especially trying to do her business in the tight quarters we have at the shelter!) Don't let this deter you, though, Tug is a kitty with all the best intentions, she just needs the right human to help her along in her journey! Tug has the best rumbly purr, and like many calicos, is a huge talker! She could live with respectful children who aren't rough with her--she is not comfortable being picked up and carried around! (Likely due to her current size.) Tug prefers to be the only cat in the home. Because she is slow moving, her ideal home will be dog free. This timid girl is Bella and she is looking for just the right home. This new home should have another dog friend because she LOVES to play with other dogs. People are still a bit scary so any kids in the home should be teenagers. An adult only home would be even better. Bella has never lived with cats so she should probably continue to live in a cat free home. Bella will need to be signed up for positive reward based classes before her adoption can be finalized. Bella is playful and will need plenty of physical and mental stimulation to keep her healthy and happy. Bella can be a bit barky and would do best living in a house rather than an apartment or condo. If you are interested in this sweet shy lady, please fill out an application at customer service so you can meet her.

We don't know much about Baby's history, but, she can be very skittish at first and appears to have zero personality when meeting someone new. As soon as she warms up, however, she is quite charming! She does need a home with the patience to move slowly around her - especially until she's comfortable. Haltering, grooming, leading makes her nervous until she's 100% confident there is no threat. Baby has been diagnosed with asthma but it seems to be situational. Something in the pasture is causing her to struggle with breathing, however, in the stall and paddocks she is perfectly fine. She will need medication for the rest of her life, but it is only given on an as needed basis, not an everyday dosage. She also has oddly formed feet so she is slightly prone to laminitis, but with the proper environment she is okay. Other than that, she is a pretty typical lovely horse. She just wants to eat treats and lay in the sand all day! Loves snuggles and head scratches! Approximately 12 years old. Gentle, intelligent, forgiving, & sweet mare. Quarter Cross If you are interested in adding Baby to your family, please contact farm@whatcomhumane.org.

Meet Ryder! This handsome fella came in as a stray and is now looking for his forever home. Ryder can be a bit wary of strangers, but is a very loyal companion once he knows you. With the help from our wonderful volunteers, Ryder is learning that people aren't so bad. He does better with women but is slowly learning that men aren't that bad. He may take some time to warm up to new people but trust us when we say he is the biggest lover in the world. He has so much love to give and just wants someone who will give him a chance. He seems to lack some confidence, and is required to be signed up for positive, reward based obedience classes prior to his adoption. This will ensure him and his new person get started off on the right paw! Ryder has a bit of a prey drive and will need a home with NO cats or small animals. Another canine companion could be good for him, as this would build his confidence and help him burn off some excess energy. As with all dogs, they'd have to meet first to ensure they're a good match. He absolutely loves other dogs and would love a home that would take him to doggy daycare so he can play with all his friends. He is currently going to Tails-a-wagging to learn how to socialize with other dogs and does great! Ryder is a very smart boy and learn new tricks very quickly. Ryder prefers an ADULT ONLY home.

Meet Forrest & Gypsy - a pair of wonderful horses looking for a permanent, responsible and loving home TOGETHER. Forrest is a six month old Paint colt who arrived at WHS last spring as an orphaned infant. He suffered from severe tendon laxity in his front legs which made walking extremely difficult. Our farm caretakers cared for him round the clock for several weeks until he could care for himself. His endured multiple treatments on this front legs and even wore orthopedic horse shoes for a time. Thanks to their heroic efforts and the expertise of the equine veterinarians at Kulshan Veterinary Clinic, he is now a happy, healthy little boy. Forrest is halter broke, experienced and cooperative with both the vet and farrier. He does well with other horses - but loves his adopted mama Gypsy the best. Gypsy is an approximately 14 year old Morgan cross mare who arrived at WHS as an abandoned stray. She is a super sweet, socialized horse who upon arrival at our farm facility immediately adopted little Forrest as her own. She is extremely protective of Forrest and won't let him out of her sight. Gypsy stands beautifully for both the vet and farrier and gets along well with other horses - as long as they don't get too close to her "baby" Forrest. It is mandatory that this bonded pair be adopted together into a home that will provide them with the care and attention they deserve. The adoption fee is $450. To learn more about this dynamic duo, email our farm caretaker at: farm@whatcomhumane.org.

Meet Eliza! This sweet girl is the biggest lovebug. She loves being held, and would like you to pet her as much as possible! She will purr the day away in between play sessions, and likely cuddle up to you at night. Eliza has a chronic weepy eye that may need longterm medication, however she's pretty used to her eye drops by now so medicating her is a breeze! Eliza lived with both kids and dogs in her previous home, and did really well in that situation. However, when the mother of the household got pregnant and started showing, Eliza showed her disapproval by eliminating outside her litterbox. She was taken to the vet and no medical issues were found. We feel that Eliza might like to live in an environment that is a bit more stable, with no changes in family life happening anytime soon. She is a very sweet kitty who will make a great addition to the family! To meet her, please fill out an application at the front desk.

This quiet sweetheart is Petunia and she is hoping to find a loving forever home to call her very own. Petunia is a little shy at first but if you give her cheeks a good little skritch she'll quickly show off her rumbly purr. If you keep showering her with affection, she'll become so happy and relaxed that she'll start drooling. She is a really sweet girl once she gets to know you and should make someone a wonderful companion cat. She seems like the kind of cat that wants to sit on the couch with you so she is always within arms reach of some pets. Petunia isn't overly fond of other cats and would prefer to be the only one in her new home. Since she is shy, she also wants a home without any dogs because she finds them overwhelming. Petunia can live with older children who will be respectful of her. If you are interested in meeting this charming girl, please come to the front to fill out an adoption application so you can see for yourself what a wonderful girl Petunia can be.

Pete and Holly are a bonded pair of seniors looking to find a loving home where they can live together forever. Pete is a 1994 AQHA Paint gelding who has been used as a trail horse in the past. He has had some issues with hoof abscesses throughout his life, but is currently sound and could possibly be used for some light riding. Holly is a 1996 Shire mare, who has to the best of our knowledge never been ridden. She came to WHS severely underweight, but with a high quality diet she is making great progress in getting up to a healthy weight. Holly had her jaw broken as a filly, and while it does not cause her any pain it does make it difficult for her to eat hay, so she will need to continue to supplement her diet with a high-calorie mash. She is very attached to Pete, who does not seem to mind having a draft-horse sized shadow following him around! Both horses have been mainly kept out to pasture for the last few years, so they could use refreshers on their ground manners. They are both very sweet and friendly with people and other horses, and will come running from across the pasture when they see you at the gate. If you are looking to add this adorable duo to your family, please contact farm@whatcomhumane.org.

Many questions can be answered by reading through the text below. Kindly read the information before contacting us. Please note: The picture above is a stock photo. Thank you for your interest in foster kittens! Kittens who are in our foster care program are generally kittens who arrived at the humane society as unweaned orphans , were still nursing, or were not old or big enough to be placed up for adoption. These kittens would not have survived in a stressful shelter environment. Our foster care program provides care and comfort for animals with special needs in private homes of our trained volunteer foster care providers. Once the kittens are old enough (usually 6-8 weeks) and weigh enough to be spayed or neutered (2 lbs), they return to the shelter for adoption. Call the shelter at (360) 733-2080 to inquire about available kittens. Please note that we do not place “holds” on animals until you’ve met them in person, even if you’ve filled out an application and expressed interest in a specific animal. This is because we want to ensure that each animal is a good fit for the interested party, and that the interested party is a good fit for the animal. We try to set each adoption up for success, for both the animals and for the people. The kittens would love to meet you! Do you feel the same? Please fill out an adoption application (here or at either shelter) and turn it in to Caitlyn Orr the foster care coordinator via email at foster@whatcomhumane.org, or fax it to 360.733.4746. Our adoption counselors will help you figure out if you're right for each other. Questions about foster kittens in general or other foster animals? Dog friends sitting together in the back of a car

A Friend for My Dog

An update on Tarzan (right), who is now named Mackie. He is the greatest addition and I’m so glad I found him. I’m also very grateful for the Whatcom Humane Society and all the hard work you do there. Mackie is now absolute best friends with my older pitbull Messy and is helping keep him young. They both go to work with me every day and my employer purchased a canopy for my truck so they can ride safely.

When I first got him he was pretty rough around the edges – but in a little over a month he has come so far. He’s an amazing dog and I’m so glad you guys helped him until his person came along. Since I adopted him I have learned a lot. I also discovered that buying a memory foam twin mattress is the best dog bed the world. Again, thank you guys so much for providing the hard work, dedication and love to all the animals that come through your doors.

Cat with a pink collar named Margo

We Named Her Margo

Hi! My mom and I adopted a cat from you guys in September. Her name was Shakira, I changed her name to Margo, after Margo in the book Paper Towns. She is such a great fit for me. I wanted a cat that would always be around me, be affectionate and sleep with me, that is exactly who she is. She follows my sleep schedule, at about 6:30am every morning she will wake me up, I absolutely love her!   She is very vocal. When I get home from school she’s normally in my room and starts meowing until I greet her. My mom told me while I was at school the second day we had her she was meowing for me until I came home. She was immediately attached to me. Her first night here we put her in a large crate to get her use to the surroundings and the next night she slept on my bed and has been ever since. She always sleeps on me or next to me. She’s such a funny girl. I love her personality. She is a very precious cat. I’m really glad I was able to adopt her. She is the perfect match for me.

Thank you Whatcom Humane Society!  -Brieanah, Rhonda and Margo.

A dog named Blue

A Dog Named Blue

Blue is a beautiful, rambunctious girl looking for a loving, active family to call her own! Blue is young and full of energy. She will require a lot of exercise, which would make her a perfect hiking or jogging buddy! Blue is working hard on her manners & learning a lot from the volunteers who work with her each day. She is still a puppy though, so she is a bit jumpy & mouthy as she feels her way through the world. She will require a home with no small children as she could accidentally knock them down. Blue would probably be too high energy for most cats, and she hasn’t done very well with other dogs at the shelter. She will be required to be signed up for positive reward based training with one of our approved trainers to help her adopters learn to guide and support her through her tough teenage years.

Think she’s a good fit?

We will be collecting applications for Blue and calling back the most appropriate homes to come in for a meet and greet.  If you think she would be a good fit for your home, please complete an adoption application today!
