ADOPT

Adopting a pet is one of the greatest gifts you can give, to the animal – and to yourself. Thank you for considering adoption from  Whatcom Humane Society.

Our interactive adoption process strives to place animals into permanent, responsible and loving homes. Our staff work with potential adopters to help choose the best match possible, both for the animal and the adopter. Prior to meeting an animal, potential adopters are asked to complete an adoption application to better help our staff understand what you are looking for in a companion animal. These applications remain on file for 6 months, so there is no need to complete an application each time you visit our domestic animal shelter. Adopters must complete an adoption application and be able to fulfill the adoption requirements necessary in order to be considered or approved for adoption.

Application forms for dogs and cats (Adobe Acrobat PDF files) may be downloaded below.

Well the weather outside is frightful but Jackson is so delightful!! Spend some time with this sweet older guy and we think you'll agree! He was surrendered because he was bullying the other resident cat in the home. If given enough space in his new home and plenty of mental stimulation he would likely do fine with another tolerant cat. He lived in his previous home for his whole life so it might take him a little bit of time to warm up to a brand new castle before he's ready to strut his stuff. He feels safest when he can hide under something and will likely seek that comfort if the house is getting a little too noisy for his liking. He would love nothing more than to binge watch some Netflix with you on the couch and provide his lap warming expertise! He has lived with dogs in the past and would likely do fine with cat savvy dogs as long as they know better than to chase him. He is very tolerant but would likely do best in a home with kids 12 or over since commotion can get overwhelming. We think he would be adorable at any weight but he really needs someone who will be committed to helping him shed some pounds in the future (it's his New Year's Resolution). A high quality weight management food and designated playtime/exercise would definitely be a step in the right direction. There's no place like home for the holidays and Jackson's wish this year is to have a forever home with you!

Hello! My name is Tecate! I'm Sorry if I'm hiding right now, but being in WHS has been pretty scary for me! When it comes to relationships, I'm very level-headed. I don't leap in paws first, if you know what I mean! All I need is a little time and patience to warm up to someone! Since I am unsure and pretty shy, a quiet single person home would be the most ideal for me. I would not do well with other cats or dogs living in the same space as me! If I seem like the Puuuurfect match for you, head up to the front desk and fill out an application to meet me!

I'm an easy going cat that can live with children, other cats, and dogs. Have you heard my amazing voice yet? I love to talk and chirp and serenade you with my lovely voice. I have lived as an outdoor only cat but would love a responsible indoor/outdoor home; I want to be able to come in and snuggle with my family. Are you up for regular grooming of my beautiful coat? I want a home that will brush me even though I may not like it I know I need it to help control my shedding. Do we sound like we could be best friends? Hi there I'm Manny. I'm just and easy going guy looking for a lap to call my own. I love to snuggle and will jump in your lap when asked. I love to hang out and tell you all about my day while you pat my butt. I have been told that I might be a dog in a cats body because I am so people oriented. I love my humans attention so much I don't want to share it with any one else so I will need to be your only fur baby. I like children they give me extra love so I can live with kids of any age.

Hey guys. I'm a little nervous so please don't stare at me. I am not sure how I got here but I just want to go to a home that will love me and go slow. I'm a sweet boy who is just nervous in this environment. I'll need lots of time to come out of my shell. I lived with children in my previous home but I didn't really like it. I would like an adult only home please! Depending on your experience I may need to go to positive reward based obedience classes with you to help me bond with you. I will need to meet any potential dog housemates since I'm so unsure. I originally came from a shelter in California and never really had time to fully settle in my previous home so I'm looking for my forever home! Hi I'm Sophie! I am a shy, but sweet chihuahua mix looking for my forever home! I have been passed around to a couple different households in the past year, which has made me very unsure of life and a little nervous around people! I may take time to warm up to your company, but once I am in your lap or in your arms I am happy! Belly rubs are my absolute favorite (watch how cute my little tail is when it's wagging!!). Once I break out of my shell I am curious and playful. I would like to live with another out-going dog to help improve my self-confidence level! Because I am so scared sometimes, a home with children 16 or older would be the perfect match for me! If you are interested in meeting me, please ask the front desk for an application to fill out!

Hello I am beautiful, bouncy Bianca. I absolutely love all people and I just love attention. I love to be pet head to tail and really lean into your legs while I get my pets. I am a bit of a jumpy girl and due to me being so strong I need to live with children 12 and up so they can handle my strength. I would love a home that can play fetch with me, take me for walks, and even provide food puzzles to keep my brain nice and sharp. I'm the type of girl who wants to play all day and snuggle all night. I wouldn't mind living with another dog but would need to meet them to make sure we get along. I haven't lived with a cat before and am not sure how I feel about them. I think to be on the safe side I would like my home feline free. Think you got room in your heart and in your bed for me? Hi there I'm Buttercup. I am what the humans call an independent feline. I have lived my life as an outdoor only girl chasing mice and hunting. Now that I am aging gracefully and have lost all of my teeth I think I am ready for some indoor only life to settle down. Since I am missing my teeth I require a soft diet to help me eat. I am a nervous shy girl as I haven't spent too much time with humans but if the right person comes along and really takes their time with me I am willing to give it a try. I want a quiet adult only home to help me into this new transition in my life; those children are just too much for me. I can live with another cat or dog but I would really appreciate a companion that doesn't bother me or chase me. If you would like to spend some time and get to know me please head up to customer service for an application to meet with me.

Hello there my name is Baby Girl. I am a very shy timid kitty. The world is just so big and scary for a small girl like me. I am looking for a human to help me gain confidence and learn that people aren't so scary. I want a quiet adult only home where I can have lots of places to hide. Once I feel more comfortable in my new space I may come in your lap and hide my face in the comfort of my human. I am looking for a human with lots of patience and a kind heart to allow me to blossom on my time into my new home. Since the world is so scary I need to be indoor only; I can't handle all the hustle and bustle of the outdoor world. I have lived with another cat before and could live with one again but I have terms. My new roommate must be very easy going and not bother me too much. I also want a nice slow proper introduction to get us on the right track. I do not want to live with dogs they are way to scary for me. If you have an opening in your home and heart for a scared little girl like me please head up to customer service for an application to meet with me.

Say hi to Papa. This sweet little fluff ball is looking for a home to call his own. They are smart, inquisitive, active, vocal, loving animals and entertaining to watch. Chinchillas do require some specialized care so please do some research before taking one home. Chinchillas require dirt baths; no water for their very special fur. Chinchilla's will also need a nice big enclosure so they can play and explore. They cannot have any paper bedding because they think it is a snack and will eat the paper. Since they can live up to 20 years they can be long time companions. Although loving animals, they do require gentle and careful handling and for this reason they do best in a home with older respectful children. Chinchillas are vegetarians, have sensitive stomachs, and require specific foods to maintain their health. They are also animals that partake in coprophagy, meaning they eat their own feces. This practice is completely normal and necessary for them to get important nutrients. Hay provides the roughage your chinchilla needs and is a very important part of his daily diet. It also can aid in wearing his ever growing teeth. Timothy or Alfalfa hay is a good choice along with commercial pallet chinchilla food. If you would like to spend some time with him please head up to customer service for an application to meet with him.

I want my humans to adore me with affection; lots of head scratches and treats. Careful though I do this really cute thing where I roll over and you want to pet my belly so bad but its a trick I'll kick you with my back legs! I really love to play with wand type toys. I love pawing at them as I lay down; I might get up but it will really have to be worth it. I love to find lounging spots any where I can: a towel, a blanket, a chair, your counter top 🙂 I'm looking for a home with children over 12 who understand not to pet my belly and give me my space if I want it. I think I can live with another cat but would like the introduction to be nice and slow. No dogs for me please they are just to much drama to deal with. Hi I'm Louis and I am the perfect lap kitty. I love to snuggle and get petted, I am a purr-monster. I can be a bit timid and shy, loud noises are specially scary for me therefore I require a home without dogs or children younger than 12. I have lived with another feline friend before but I was not a big fan. A proper introduction with another feline is a must in order to help us become best friends to share our territory. Although I look fully grown I am only 8 months old and will probably keep growing a little more. I will require lots of grooming to keep my luscious locks from getting matted and in gorgeous condition. I will also require a high protein, high quality dry food diet to help me keep the crystals in my pee under control, and will keep me from urinating outside of my litter box. If you want to hear my purr please fill out an application at the front desk!

About Me: I love attention and pets, mostly because I'm so itchy! I have some bad allergies and will probably need to be on allergy meds to help me be more comfortable. I don't know what exactly I'm allergic too, so getting me allergy tested might be a good idea too. I don't think I've have a lot of experience with the outside world, so I can be a little nervous of new things, but I'm always curious! I don't want to live with cats, because they are way too fun to chase! I love toys and anything that squeaks and bounces! I think I would like to live with a dog that would play with me and show me the ropes, but I will have to meet them to make sure we are a good match. I would really like to take a positive, reward based obedience class, which would help me learn some manners and establish a trusting relationship with my new humans. About you: You are looking for an active dog to take on runs, hikes, mountain biking--you name it! You are patient and willing to learn with me, and teach me that new things aren't necessarily scary. You love to play with balls and toys, and want a dog to be with you every waking moment (maybe sleeping too...). Meet Apollo! This little guy is nervous around strangers, but once he gets to know you, you'll be his new favorite person! He follows his foster mom all around the house--even to the bathroom! He wants to be with his person 100% of the time. Apollo has been passed around quite a bit in his short life, and he's very ready for some stability. We think he would do best in a cattle dog or herding breed experienced home. Apollo loves other dogs, and thinks his foster brother is the best thing next to cheese. We recommend that Apollo goes to a home with another confident dog that can show him the ropes, and help bring him out of his shell; he would love a doggy sibling that would play with him. Apollo loves toys, and is already housetrained. He has been attending daycare at Tails A Wagging and would like to continue attending on a regular basis for socialization. Apollo needs a home without any cats, as he has a very high prey drive, and is still learning his manners. Because of his nervousness, Apollo would prefer an adult only home or one with teenagers 16+ who are able to respect his boundaries. Apollo will be required to sign up for positive reward based training classes before his adoption can be finalized. As with all puppies, we will be accepting applications and contacting applicants to set a meet and greet.

Given Psy is a working dog he needs an active family that can give him the proper stimulation that he needs to keep him happy and satisfied. Unfortunately, Psy was not taught many manners as a puppy so he still has a bunch of learning to do, he can be a little rude sometimes but he is so eager to learn and please he redirects rather quickly and pays attention when being worked with. Psy is motivated to be the best dog he can be but he would definitely do best in a home with no children and can easily knock over an elderly family member as well. Visit with Psy today to see if he will be your new hiking, running, biking and of course snuggle buddy. **Adoption applications submitted for puppies under one year of age will initially be put on file for review only. He will need to be signed up for positive reward based classes before his adoption can be finalized. This will help him learn some basic manners and bond with his new family. He is a bit to much for cats but may be able to live with just the right dog. He is a bit rude and obnoxious with other dogs and just needs to learn how to play more respectfully. Sporty loves to play tug of war and he really enjoys his plush squeaky toys. He would make a great hiking/running buddy. If you are interested in this awesome boy, please fill out an application at the front desk.

He is a bit timid about being held and he will need daily socialization to help him enjoy being held. He is looking for a roomy cage that is kept clean and tidy! Tonto is a fantastic 30+ thoroughbred gelding on the search for the perfect retirement home. He is a handsome old man who loves butt and neck scratches! He may have seniority and sometimes knows it, but, as soon as he knows he can't get away with calling the shots, he is a perfect, sweet and loving gentleman. Tonto has a very striking look about him with one unique eye. He never complains about it being dinner time or time to come into the barn and loves to be groomed. He will stand perfectly for hours if someone is brushing him! He prefers the company of mares and some other geldings. Meet Mimi! This gorgeous kitty is looking for a home that will love her for who she is! Mimi's former home surrendered her to us because she was scratching the carpet. Mimi would love it if her new home would invest in some extra cat scratchers in all sorts of varieties so she can have other options besides the carpet! Mimi is a typical sassy female cat who prefers love on her terms. When she's in the mood for pets, she is the biggest love bug, and will press all her weight into your hand to really get the full effect! When she's NOT in the mood for pets, she'll let you know-- she has perfected a pristine "Ice Queen" glare when she feels her boundaries have been crossed! Mimi would be a great companion for a retired person who's just looking for a buddy to share their space with. Mimi would love a nice sunny spot on the windowsill, or a tall cat tree she can perch upon to survey her kingdom. Mimi would prefer to be an only kitty but might be able to coexist with a laidback male cat if given a proper introduction. A dog that will leave her alone (or allow her to rule over!) might be okay. Mimi is a sweet, unique looking feline who's just waiting for her perfect match! If you think that could be you, head up to the front desk for an application to meet her!

  • Quarterhorse
  • Up-to-date with routine shots
We don't know much about Baby's history, but, she can be very skittish at first and appears to have zero personality when meeting someone new. As soon as she warms up, however, she is quite charming! She does need a home with the patience to move slowly around her - especially until she's comfortable. Haltering, grooming, leading makes her nervous until she's 100% confident there is no threat. Baby has been diagnosed with asthma but it seems to be situational. Something in the pasture is causing her to struggle with breathing, however, in the stall and paddocks she is perfectly fine. She will need medication for the rest of her life, but it is only given on an as needed basis, not an everyday dosage. She also has oddly formed feet so she is slightly prone to laminitis, but with the proper environment she is okay. Other than that, she is a pretty typical lovely horse. She just wants to eat treats and lay in the sand all day! Loves snuggles and head scratches! Approximately 12 years old. Gentle, intelligent, forgiving, & sweet mare. Pete is a 1994 AQHA Paint gelding who has been used as a trail horse in the past. He has had some issues with hoof abscesses throughout his life, but is currently sound and could possibly be used for some light riding. Pete has been mainly kept out to pasture for the last few years, so they could use refreshers on his ground manners. He is sweet and friendly with people and other horses, and will come running from across the pasture when he sees you at the gate. Many questions can be answered by reading through the text below. Kindly read the information before contacting us. Please note: The picture above is a stock photo. Thank you for your interest in foster kittens! Kittens who are in our foster care program are generally kittens who arrived at the humane society as unweaned orphans , were still nursing, or were not old or big enough to be placed up for adoption. These kittens would not have survived in a stressful shelter environment. Our foster care program provides care and comfort for animals with special needs in private homes of our trained volunteer foster care providers. Once the kittens are old enough (usually 6-8 weeks) and weigh enough to be spayed or neutered (2 lbs), they return to the shelter for adoption. Call the shelter at (360) 733-2080 to inquire about available kittens. Please note that we do not place “holds” on animals until you’ve met them in person, even if you’ve filled out an application and expressed interest in a specific animal. This is because we want to ensure that each animal is a good fit for the interested party, and that the interested party is a good fit for the animal. We try to set each adoption up for success, for both the animals and for the people. The kittens would love to meet you! Do you feel the same? Please fill out an adoption application (here or at either shelter) and turn it in to Caitlyn Orr the foster care coordinator via email at foster@whatcomhumane.org, or fax it to 360.733.4746. Our adoption counselors will help you figure out if you're right for each other. Questions about foster kittens in general or other foster animals? Dog friends sitting together in the back of a car

A Friend for My Dog

An update on Tarzan (right), who is now named Mackie. He is the greatest addition and I’m so glad I found him. I’m also very grateful for the Whatcom Humane Society and all the hard work you do there. Mackie is now absolute best friends with my older pitbull Messy and is helping keep him young. They both go to work with me every day and my employer purchased a canopy for my truck so they can ride safely.

When I first got him he was pretty rough around the edges – but in a little over a month he has come so far. He’s an amazing dog and I’m so glad you guys helped him until his person came along. Since I adopted him I have learned a lot. I also discovered that buying a memory foam twin mattress is the best dog bed the world. Again, thank you guys so much for providing the hard work, dedication and love to all the animals that come through your doors.

Cat with a pink collar named Margo

We Named Her Margo

Hi! My mom and I adopted a cat from you guys in September. Her name was Shakira, I changed her name to Margo, after Margo in the book Paper Towns. She is such a great fit for me. I wanted a cat that would always be around me, be affectionate and sleep with me, that is exactly who she is. She follows my sleep schedule, at about 6:30am every morning she will wake me up, I absolutely love her!   She is very vocal. When I get home from school she’s normally in my room and starts meowing until I greet her. My mom told me while I was at school the second day we had her she was meowing for me until I came home. She was immediately attached to me. Her first night here we put her in a large crate to get her use to the surroundings and the next night she slept on my bed and has been ever since. She always sleeps on me or next to me. She’s such a funny girl. I love her personality. She is a very precious cat. I’m really glad I was able to adopt her. She is the perfect match for me.

Thank you Whatcom Humane Society!  -Brieanah, Rhonda and Margo.

A dog named Blue

A Dog Named Blue

Blue is a beautiful, rambunctious girl looking for a loving, active family to call her own! Blue is young and full of energy. She will require a lot of exercise, which would make her a perfect hiking or jogging buddy! Blue is working hard on her manners & learning a lot from the volunteers who work with her each day. She is still a puppy though, so she is a bit jumpy & mouthy as she feels her way through the world. She will require a home with no small children as she could accidentally knock them down. Blue would probably be too high energy for most cats, and she hasn’t done very well with other dogs at the shelter. She will be required to be signed up for positive reward based training with one of our approved trainers to help her adopters learn to guide and support her through her tough teenage years.

Think she’s a good fit?

We will be collecting applications for Blue and calling back the most appropriate homes to come in for a meet and greet.  If you think she would be a good fit for your home, please complete an adoption application today!
