ADOPT

Adopting a pet is one of the greatest gifts you can give, to the animal – and to yourself. Thank you for considering adoption from  Whatcom Humane Society.

Our interactive adoption process strives to place animals into permanent, responsible and loving homes. Our staff work with potential adopters to help choose the best match possible, both for the animal and the adopter. Prior to meeting an animal, potential adopters are asked to complete an adoption application to better help our staff understand what you are looking for in a companion animal. These applications remain on file for 6 months, so there is no need to complete an application each time you visit our domestic animal shelter. Adopters must complete an adoption application and be able to fulfill the adoption requirements necessary in order to be considered or approved for adoption.

Application forms for dogs and cats (Adobe Acrobat PDF files) may be downloaded below.

Met Wellington! This shy guy is looking for a home that can go slow and take their time getting to know him. He enjoys his head and chin being scratched but would like a nice slow introduction getting to know you. After he warms up he really enjoys being pet and loves treats! Wellington will need an adult only home, he wasn't a fan of being hugged or picked up, children will be too much for this guy. Wellington also reacted very negatively to a stuffed animal dog in his evaluation so NO DOGS please. Wellington did not seem to be a fan of the other cats in the shelter but that may be due to stress. He could potentially live with another easy going feline companion with very slow introductions done properly. Wellington also enjoyed playing with the wand and love his new home to have toys and cat trees for him. If this sweet boy sounds like the right addition to your family please head up to customer service for an application to meet with him.

Meet Twin! A lovely boy who enjoys giving head butts and getting his ears and chin scratched. He is not a fan of being picked up so any children in the home should be older, respectful kids that understand he has boundaries. He might be able to live with a cat savvy dog that will allow him his personal space. Although he would prefer to be the only cat he may be able to live with another feline if given enough time and proper introduction. Twin would love a nice warm bed to curl up in, a scratching post to sharpen his claws and some cat nip toys to entertain him. If you would like to meet Twin, please fill out an application at the front desk.

Hi my name is Jax!. I am only 2 months old and I am looking for my forever home. I came into the shelter as a stray so not much is known about my past. I have been sick for the first part of my stay here at the shelter so I haven't had much love and attention that I REALLY crave. I am really loud when I want to get your attention or when I am demanding my food. I need a home where I will have room to run around with toys, scratching posts, and places to perch up high so that I can spend some of my crazy kitten energy. If I sound like the perfect trouble maker for you, please fill out an application at the front desk to meet me!

Meet Emmett! He is a shy love on the lookout for a caring forever home. Once he warms up, Emmett likes to show off his rumbly purr. He will need regular brushing to keep his long fur free of tangles. Emmett has lived with other cats in the past and would likely do fine living with another easy-going feline friend. Dogs are a little overwhelming so he would prefer a home without dogs. Since he is pretty nervous, he will do best in a home with older children or adults only who will be patient with him while he is settling in. If you are interested in potentially adopting Emmett, please come to the front to fill out an adoption application so you can spend some quality time with him today!

Hi, I'm Cricket! I ended up here at the shelter with my two babies as a surrender because my previous owner had too many animals. My favorite things are to explore every inch of every room I go into, and having conversations with people. I am a pretty easy-going kitty who just wants to do her own thing but also enjoys attention on my terms. I do enjoy head rubs! Since I am so chill I would do well with respectful kids, dogs, and/or cats who are introduced properly and will give me the space I need to do my own thing. If I sound like the perfect fit for your home, please fill out an application at the front desk to come and meet me!!!

Say hello to Sophie! This independent feline is looking for her new home to rule. Sophie is like most female felines, she wants all your love an affection but on her terms and her time. Sophie will give little swats and love nibbles to let you know she wants to be alone but then once you leave she may want you back. A lot of this back and forth behavior is due to the fact that she is very stressed being at the shelter. Sophie absolutely dose not like other cats and being in a shelter with other cats is really causing her stress. She is what we call a cage tiger. In the kennels she may be a little feisty but once out of the kennel and free to roam she is all love. She gives big head butts and loves to rub on you and all the furniture. Be cautious though Sophie really does not like her feet and belly touched. If this sassy girl would make a great addition to your family please head up to customer service for an application to meet with her.

Meet Miss Meg and her siblings Morty, Moose, Monique, and Melissa! These siblings were brought to the shelter after their owner couldn't keep them anymore. They came in at 9 weeks and became sick soon after. They are feeling much better now and are ready for their forever home! Miss Meg would love to go home with one of her siblings or to a home with another cat or dog. They are ready to play and run around. Miss Meg would love lots of toys and playtime in her new home. Cats can live 15-20+ years so Miss Meg needs someone ready to make a commitment to her for the rest of her life. We don't know if they lived with children in the past but they could likely live with respectful children. This high energy dog is Sporty and he is looking for a really active family that can handle his exuberance. He would do best in a home with children 12 and older as he is strong, mouthy and jumpy. He will need to be signed up for positive reward based classes before his adoption can be finalized. This will help him learn some basic manners and bond with his new family. He is a bit to much for cats but may be able to live with just the right dog. He is a bit rude and obnoxious with other dogs and just needs to learn how to play more respectfully. Meet Django! This sweet boy is active, affectionate, and very smart. You may not know it at first glance of his hefty stature, but his previous owner said he ran 8 miles a day! Django is a gentle boy who would make a great family dog. He'd love a home with a big fenced yard where his people are home most of the time, as he can get a bit lonely (and will let you know by singing you a lovely song!) Django got along fine with the female dog in his previous home and might be okay living with a doggy sibling in the future, although he can be a bit selective on which dogs he deems to be "friends". Any potential canine housemates will have to meet first to ensure they're a good match. Django would probably do best in a home with no cats or small animals. He'd love to go on daily runs, walks and hikes with his new family, and of course have lots of playtime! He loves toys and is very joyful in play-- his exuberant, gleeful nature is sure to bring a smile to your face! Django is quite the gentleman on leash; he's very attentive and listens well. He takes treats gently and loves to show off his cool tricks! He already knows "Sit", "Down", "Stay", "Shake", and "High Five", and is very eager to add more tricks to his repertoire. Django is a great dog through and through, and will be a wonderful buddy and family member to most homes. Are your morning runs feeling a little lonely? Need a peppy, enthusiastic comrade to help kickstart your day? Well look no further, you've found your guy! Charlie is an active, intelligent dog who embodies the traits of your typical Border Collie: he is HIGH energy, and at times, can prove to be a little too smart for his own good. He's sure to get into trouble if not given proper outlets for his energy. Charlie needs an equally active home that can commit to providing him with LOTS of DAILY exercise. One leisurely stroll around the block is NOT going to cut it for this active guy! He'd love lots of room to roam, and does not like being confined to small, indoor areas. He'd be a great dog for someone who lives out in the county with lots of acreage, maybe with some animals to look after. Charlie would love to have a job to do, and would likely be a great candidate for running agility! Charlie will need a home with no kids or cats. I am a typical puppy with a bunch of energy for an active family or a large property with plenty of room to run and the dedication I need to grow into the great dog I can be! I am in the important stage of my life when I need to be getting to know other people, dogs and kids, I do have a history with ducks and chickens so I should not be left alone with them for any period of time. Meet the wonderful Forge! This studly dude hasn't had the best upbringing, and is looking for a patient home with a sense of humor! Forge's previous owner's stated that they never walked or exercised him, which for this active guy, is an absolute NO-NO! He wants to have lots of constructive outlets for his energy, and loves to play with toys and go for walks. He'd love a fenced yard where he can run around freely. Forge knows a few commands, but definitely needs to brush up on his manners. For this reason, he will have to be signed up for positive, reward based classes prior to his adoption. This will also serve as an excellent way to burn off some energy! Forge lived with a child in his previous home, but has been known to growl at unfamiliar children. This means Forge will need an adult-only home. He will also need to live in a cat-free house. Forge might be able to live with just the right canine companion-- perhaps a goofy, female dog who can keep up with his rambunctious play style! Any potential housemates will have to meet first to ensure they're a good match. Meet Spartacus - a spectacular African Spurred Tortoise (also known as Sulcata Tortoise) looking for a permanent, responsible and loving home. Spartacus is a fantastic tortoise who needs a home that is extremely experienced with tortoise/reptile care. He/She (we are not exactly sure!) can grow up to be very large and live for many decades if properly cared for. Currently, Spartacus is being housed in a large plastic swimming pool, with two separate heat sources to allow him proper space, areas to bask in the heat, nest and roam and burrow. A new home will need to have the resources to provide for this amazing tortoise as he/she continues to grow - this will include indoor/outdoor enclosures, heat sources and veterinary care. Spartacus loves to snack on dark leafy greens and veggies (shredded carrots and tomatos are a current favorite), very limited amounts of fruit and orchard and alfalfa hay, which is used as both a snack and for nesting. This hairy little man is Jack! He was surrendered to us because his owner no longer had time for him. Jack is very curious, but gets nervous when picked up. Slowly scooping him up from underneath is the best way to pick him up without scaring him. Jack would love an enclosure with lots of hidey holes and wood chews! Jack is eight months old, but hamsters can live up to four years! For their diet, dry pellets and added veggies such as peas or broccoli is best. Also, there should always be access to fresh water. If you're interested in meeting Jack, please fill out an application at the front desk!

This super silly, high energy puppy is Marla and she is ready to be adopted. She is a loving and affectionate dog that can live with respectful children. She enjoys the company of other dogs and would love another canine companion in her new home. She will have to meet any potential house mates to ensure they will be a good match. Meet Crona the ferret! Ferrets live for 6 to 13 years and during that time they will require regular vaccinations and veterinary check ups to remain in tip top shape. In particular, Ferrets are at risk of fleas and heartworm, so monthly preventative treatments like Advocate (for kittens) should be used. They are also at risk of canine distemper, and annual vaccination can prevent this. Ferrets are highly intelligent and social pets that do best in small groups. It is highly recommended you consider adopting a pair of ferrets so they will always have a companion to socialize with. Ferrets natural play includes nipping and training is required to ensure your ferret knows that nipping humans is not an acceptable behavior. They are also extremely inquisitive, anything you may have in your home IS of interest, so ferret proofing your home is must so they do not get caught in between, underneath or behind things.are usually designed with two levels and a place to hang a cozy hammock. The cage should also contain a dark enclosure such as a wooden hut, where the ferrets can make a nest for sleeping. Towels and similar fabrics make good bedding. The bedding will need to be washed frequently, and the cage itself will need regular scrubbing. Your ferret needs several litter boxes: one for the cage and several for playtime outside the cage. The best litters to use are shredded paper and newspaper-based cat litters. If you are interested in adopting Crona, please fill out an application at the front desk.

Bently has a bite history with children and will need an adult only home. He shows some signs of resource guarding which is something he will need to work on. Bently is also not a fan of being petted and will give you a quick warning about hugging or trying to pet him when he doesn't want you to. He will need to be signed up for positive reward based classes before his adoption can be finalized. He might be able to live with another dog but it would have to be a perfect match. He should not live with cats. Bently is known to be anxious and will bark at noises, strangers and anything he deems scary. This sweet boy is a bit of a project dog but with the right person he will make a wonderful companion. We will be collecting applications for Bently and then calling back the most appropriate homes to come in and meet him. **Adoption applications submitted for puppies under one year of age will initially be put on file for review only. Meet Mimi! This gorgeous kitty is looking for a home that will love her for who she is! Mimi's former home surrendered her to us because she was scratching the carpet. Mimi would love it if her new home would invest in some extra cat scratchers in all sorts of varieties so she can have other options besides the carpet! Mimi is a typical sassy female cat who prefers love on her terms. When she's in the mood for pets, she is the biggest love bug, and will press all her weight into your hand to really get the full effect! When she's NOT in the mood for pets, she'll let you know-- she has perfected a pristine "Ice Queen" glare when she feels her boundaries have been crossed! Mimi would be a great companion for a retired person who's just looking for a buddy to share their space with. Mimi would love a nice sunny spot on the windowsill, or a tall cat tree she can perch upon to survey her kingdom. Mimi would prefer to be an only kitty but might be able to coexist with a laidback male cat if given a proper introduction. A dog that will leave her alone (or allow her to rule over!) might be okay. Mimi is a sweet, unique looking feline who's just waiting for her perfect match! If you think that could be you, head up to the front desk for an application to meet her!

We don't know much about Baby's history, but, she can be very skittish at first and appears to have zero personality when meeting someone new. As soon as she warms up, however, she is quite charming! She does need a home with the patience to move slowly around her - especially until she's comfortable. Haltering, grooming, leading makes her nervous until she's 100% confident there is no threat. Baby has been diagnosed with asthma but it seems to be situational. Something in the pasture is causing her to struggle with breathing, however, in the stall and paddocks she is perfectly fine. She will need medication for the rest of her life, but it is only given on an as needed basis, not an everyday dosage. She also has oddly formed feet so she is slightly prone to laminitis, but with the proper environment she is okay. Other than that, she is a pretty typical lovely horse. She just wants to eat treats and lay in the sand all day! Loves snuggles and head scratches! Approximately 12 years old. Gentle, intelligent, forgiving, & sweet mare. Many questions can be answered by reading through the text below. Kindly read the information before contacting us. Please note: The picture above is a stock photo. Thank you for your interest in foster kittens! Kittens who are in our foster care program are generally kittens who arrived at the humane society as unweaned orphans , were still nursing, or were not old or big enough to be placed up for adoption. These kittens would not have survived in a stressful shelter environment. Our foster care program provides care and comfort for animals with special needs in private homes of our trained volunteer foster care providers. Once the kittens are old enough (usually 6-8 weeks) and weigh enough to be spayed or neutered (2 lbs), they return to the shelter for adoption. Call the shelter at (360) 733-2080 to inquire about available kittens. Please note that we do not place “holds” on animals until you’ve met them in person, even if you’ve filled out an application and expressed interest in a specific animal. This is because we want to ensure that each animal is a good fit for the interested party, and that the interested party is a good fit for the animal. We try to set each adoption up for success, for both the animals and for the people. The kittens would love to meet you! Do you feel the same? Please fill out an adoption application (here or at either shelter) and turn it in to Caitlyn Orr the foster care coordinator via email at foster@whatcomhumane.org, or fax it to 360.733.4746. Our adoption counselors will help you figure out if you're right for each other. Questions about foster kittens in general or other foster animals? Dog friends sitting together in the back of a car

A Friend for My Dog

An update on Tarzan (right), who is now named Mackie. He is the greatest addition and I’m so glad I found him. I’m also very grateful for the Whatcom Humane Society and all the hard work you do there. Mackie is now absolute best friends with my older pitbull Messy and is helping keep him young. They both go to work with me every day and my employer purchased a canopy for my truck so they can ride safely.

When I first got him he was pretty rough around the edges – but in a little over a month he has come so far. He’s an amazing dog and I’m so glad you guys helped him until his person came along. Since I adopted him I have learned a lot. I also discovered that buying a memory foam twin mattress is the best dog bed the world. Again, thank you guys so much for providing the hard work, dedication and love to all the animals that come through your doors.

Cat with a pink collar named Margo

We Named Her Margo

Hi! My mom and I adopted a cat from you guys in September. Her name was Shakira, I changed her name to Margo, after Margo in the book Paper Towns. She is such a great fit for me. I wanted a cat that would always be around me, be affectionate and sleep with me, that is exactly who she is. She follows my sleep schedule, at about 6:30am every morning she will wake me up, I absolutely love her!   She is very vocal. When I get home from school she’s normally in my room and starts meowing until I greet her. My mom told me while I was at school the second day we had her she was meowing for me until I came home. She was immediately attached to me. Her first night here we put her in a large crate to get her use to the surroundings and the next night she slept on my bed and has been ever since. She always sleeps on me or next to me. She’s such a funny girl. I love her personality. She is a very precious cat. I’m really glad I was able to adopt her. She is the perfect match for me.

Thank you Whatcom Humane Society!  -Brieanah, Rhonda and Margo.

A dog named Blue

A Dog Named Blue

Blue is a beautiful, rambunctious girl looking for a loving, active family to call her own! Blue is young and full of energy. She will require a lot of exercise, which would make her a perfect hiking or jogging buddy! Blue is working hard on her manners & learning a lot from the volunteers who work with her each day. She is still a puppy though, so she is a bit jumpy & mouthy as she feels her way through the world. She will require a home with no small children as she could accidentally knock them down. Blue would probably be too high energy for most cats, and she hasn’t done very well with other dogs at the shelter. She will be required to be signed up for positive reward based training with one of our approved trainers to help her adopters learn to guide and support her through her tough teenage years.

Think she’s a good fit?

We will be collecting applications for Blue and calling back the most appropriate homes to come in for a meet and greet.  If you think she would be a good fit for your home, please complete an adoption application today!
