ADOPT

Adopting a pet is one of the greatest gifts you can give, to the animal – and to yourself. Thank you for considering adoption from  Whatcom Humane Society.

Our interactive adoption process strives to place animals into permanent, responsible and loving homes. Our staff work with potential adopters to help choose the best match possible, both for the animal and the adopter. Prior to meeting an animal, potential adopters are asked to complete an adoption application to better help our staff understand what you are looking for in a companion animal. These applications remain on file for 6 months, so there is no need to complete an application each time you visit our domestic animal shelter. Adopters must complete an adoption application and be able to fulfill the adoption requirements necessary in order to be considered or approved for adoption.

Application forms for dogs and cats (Adobe Acrobat PDF files) may be downloaded below.

This adorable guy is Winston and he is looking for a responsible, loving and permanent home. Winston is a playful little guy who enjoys tug of war and playing with his people. Winston was surrendered due to his high prey drive. He can not go to a home with cats, chickens or other small critters. He does however enjoy the company of other dogs and could live with another canine companion. Winston would do best in a home with respectful children ages 8 and older. He would love to go to a family that won't leave him alone for long periods of time. He will need regular grooming to keep him looking and feeling his best. He does have a corn allergy and will need a high quality diet that contains no corn. If you are interested in meeting Winston, please fill out an application at the front desk.

Meet Jake! A super sweet dog looking for his forever family. Jake is a little shy at first but warms up quickly. He walks great on leash and he loves other dogs. He would really enjoy having another canine companion in his new home. He will have to meet any potential house mates to ensure they will be a good match. He seems like he would be fine living with a confident cat. Respectful children who won't overwhelm him should be okay. Jake and his buddy were abandoned by their previous owner and ended up here at the shelter through no fault of their own. If you are looking for a new best friend then head up to customer service to meet Jake and spend some time getting to know each other.

Hi, I'm Goose! I had a rough start in life, my previous owners found running around me almost dead with several bite/scratch marks. I'm a happy boy who doesn’t know if I enjoy being petted, and is still getting used to being held for long periods of time. Regular handling will help me get used to being held and petted. I would love a home who can commit to providing me with lots of time out of my cage to run around and a pen where I can enjoy some supervised time outdoors. I have learned my name and will respond to it if you have treats. I hope that my new home commits to caring for me for life! I will need a roomy cage that is cleaned regularly. Rabbits require timothy hay daily and we always love some fresh greens. If you want to meet me, please fill out an application at the front desk!

I will need a roomy cage that is cleaned regularly. Rabbits require timothy hay daily or some other type of grass hay like orchard or grass. They also need fresh greens daily. I would be a good first time rabbit for someone since I'm pretty well socialized. If you think you can meet my needs and want to be friends, please fill out an application at the front desk!

This exuberant boy is Dozer which may be short for bulldozer because he is a bit pushy. He will need to be signed up for positive reward based classes before his adoption can be finalized. This will help him learn some manners and bond with his new family. Dozer is a sweet dog that loves to chase after the tennis ball. He is very affectionate and loves to go on long walks. He does like other dogs but can be a bit of a bully so he will need just the right dog in his new home. A confident cat might be alright but no cat would be even better. Dozer can play a bit rough so children 12 and older would be preferable. This guy is not a couch potato and really wants to go out for daily hikes and adventures with his family. If you are looking for a wonderful new companion, please head on up to customer service so you can meet Dozer.

I like other dogs and would be okay living with another canine companion. I'm super sweet and could probably live with a confident cat. I can also live with kids, especially ones that can play with me and help me lose some weight. As you can see I am a bit on the plus side and even though I still look awesome I will need plenty of exercise and a high quality, low calorie diet to help me shed some extra pounds. This will help take pressure off my joints and make my heart healthier. If you are looking for an awesome family dog then remember the name D.O.G. and ask about me at the front desk.

Meet Indi! He is a sensitive soul who bonds strongly to his family. He is currently in foster care, as the kennels are too stressful for him. He was surrendered to a local veterinary clinic and now we are looking for a great new home for him! Indi is housetrained and crate trained, although he'd rather be sitting right next to you. He knows sit, down, and roll over. Indi can be a bit wary of strangers, but is a very loyal companion once he knows you. He would benefit from positive, reward based obedience classes which you can sign up for prior to his adoption. This will ensure he and his new family get started off on the right paw! Indi has a bit of a prey drive (typical of cattle dogs) and will need a home with no cats or small animals. Another canine companion could be good for him, as this would build his confidence and help him burn off some excess energy. He does enjoy a good game of fetch. He plays well with the resident dog in his foster home. As with all dogs, they'd have to meet first to ensure they're a good match. Indi prefers an ADULT ONLY home. If you can provide Indi with a patient, loving home, please fill out an application at the front desk! You can also email interest to adoptions@whatcomhumane.org or call at 360-733-2080.

Tuthrie is a beautiful Green Cheeked Conure looking for an experienced parrot home. Conure parrots can live 20 years. And if they are cared for properly from birth then maybe 25 years. If the green cheeked conure has a poor diet it might only live 10 years. That said, the diet is what determines longevity in these birds. Specialized pellets should make up 60 to 70% of diet, plus fresh vegetables and fruits and small amounts of fortified seeds. Clean, fresh, filtered, chlorine-free water, changed daily. Do not feed birds avocado, fruit seeds, chocolate, caffeine or alcohol as these can cause serious medical conditions. Avoid sugar and high fat treats. Things to remember when feeding your green cheek conure: Fresh food and water should always be available. Vegetables and fruits not eaten within a few hours should be discarded. Treats should not exceed 10% of total food intake. Tuthrie will need his nails trimmed on a regular basis and his wings may need to be clipped so he won't take off on you. If you are interested in Tuthrie, please fill out an application at the front desk.

Meet Little Kitty!!! This beautiful lady is looking for a permanent and loving home. She is looking for a home that can pet her favorite spots, behind her ears and by her tail, whenever she wants. Little Kitty loves to give big head butts and rub on anything in site to get your attention. She was brought into the shelter because the stress of a new born baby was too overwhelming for her. She can handle a home with children over 6, that understand to respect her boundaries, but very young children in her home is too stressful. Little Kitty also lived with a feline companion and could continue to live with them but the introduction should be done slowly to allow her time to adjust. Little Kitty would do best in a home without any canines in it as she lived with a canine companion in her previous home but the majority of the time was spent hiding from him. We don't know much about Baby's history, but, she can be very skittish at first and appears to have zero personality when meeting someone new. As soon as she warms up, however, she is quite charming! She does need a home with the patience to move slowly around her - especially until she's comfortable. Haltering, grooming, leading makes her nervous until she's 100% confident there is no threat. Baby has been diagnosed with asthma but it seems to be situational. Something in the pasture is causing her to struggle with breathing, however, in the stall and paddocks she is perfectly fine. She will need medication for the rest of her life, but it is only given on an as needed basis, not an everyday dosage. She also has oddly formed feet so she is slightly prone to laminitis, but with the proper environment she is okay. Other than that, she is a pretty typical lovely horse. She just wants to eat treats and lay in the sand all day! Loves snuggles and head scratches! Approximately 12 years old. Gentle, intelligent, forgiving, & sweet mare. Hi, I'm Nannerz! Wanna see my toys? I could play all day and I will if you let me! Squeaky toys, tennis balls, rope tugs, you name it, I'll play with it! I still have a ton of puppy energy and will need an ACTIVE home that can commit to wearing me out both physically and mentally. I get a little lonely and will sing you the song of my people if you leave me for too long. This means I'd be better suited for a home environment rather than an apartment. I looooove treats and am eager to do anything I can in order to get them! I am required to sign up for positive reinforcement classes prior to my adoption. This will ensure that we get started off on the right paw! I seem to enjoy the company of other dogs and might be able to live with one in my new home, although we'll have to meet first to make sure we're a good match. I tend to bond really hard to my person, and I'll admit, I do get a bit jealous when their attention is being given to someone else. It's something I'm working on! Due to this, I'd love a home with adults only, or older, respectful children who are dog experienced and well versed in canine body language. I might be able to live with a cat, although my past with them is a mystery so any interactions should be slow and well-supervised. She's a bit unsure of the world around her, which means things like strangers, loud noises, and unfamiliar situations are pretty scary. Lulu would like her new family to have both the time and energy to invest in her future. Lulu can be a bit mischievous if her energy is not properly harnessed, which means she would benefit from a home where someone's around most of the time to supervise and tire her out! Meet Forrest & Gypsy - a pair of wonderful horses looking for a permanent, responsible and loving home TOGETHER. Forrest is a six month old Paint colt who arrived at WHS last spring as an orphaned infant. He suffered from severe tendon laxity in his front legs which made walking extremely difficult. Our farm caretakers cared for him round the clock for several weeks until he could care for himself. His endured multiple treatments on this front legs and even wore orthopedic horse shoes for a time. Thanks to their heroic efforts and the expertise of the equine veterinarians at Kulshan Veterinary Clinic, he is now a happy, healthy little boy. Forrest is halter broke, experienced and cooperative with both the vet and farrier. He does well with other horses - but loves his adopted mama Gypsy the best. Gypsy is an approximately 14 year old Morgan cross mare who arrived at WHS as an abandoned stray. She is a super sweet, socialized horse who upon arrival at our farm facility immediately adopted little Forrest as her own. She is extremely protective of Forrest and won't let him out of her sight. Gypsy stands beautifully for both the vet and farrier and gets along well with other horses - as long as they don't get too close to her "baby" Forrest. It is mandatory that this bonded pair be adopted together into a home that will provide them with the care and attention they deserve. The adoption fee is $450. To learn more about this dynamic duo, email our farm caretaker at: farm@whatcomhumane.org.

Holly is a 1996 Shire mare, who has to the best of our knowledge never been ridden. She came to WHS severely underweight, but with a high quality diet she is making great progress in getting up to a healthy weight. Holly had her jaw broken as a filly, and while it does not cause her any pain it does make it difficult for her to eat hay, so she will need to continue to supplement her diet with a high-calorie mash. She is very attached to Pete, who does not seem to mind having a draft-horse sized shadow following him around! Both horses have been mainly kept out to pasture for the last few years, so they could use refreshers on their ground manners. They are both very sweet and friendly with people and other horses, and will come running from across the pasture when they see you at the gate. If you are looking to add this adorable duo to your family, please contact farm@whatcomhumane.org.

This quiet cutie is Smokey and she is hoping to find her loving forever home. She is a mellow sweetheart who likes to have her cheeks rubbed. Once she settles in she likes to play with toys, especially if there is cat nip involved. Smokey is a social girl who might follow you from room to room to make sure she is never too fair away from her people. She should make someone a great companion cat. Smokey came to us because her last home simply had too much going on for her and she found it to be overwhelming. She didn't do well with the other cats or the puppy in her previous home. Smokey did like the older dog and might be able to live with a super laid-back dog that will respect her personal space. Smokey was also stressed out by the baby in her previous home and should live with teenagers or adults only. If you have a calm household and would like to meet Smokey, please come to the front to fill out an adoption application today.

Many questions can be answered by reading through the text below. Kindly read the information before contacting us. Please note: The picture above is a stock photo. Thank you for your interest in foster kittens! Kittens who are in our foster care program are generally kittens who arrived at the humane society as unweaned orphans , were still nursing, or were not old or big enough to be placed up for adoption. These kittens would not have survived in a stressful shelter environment. Our foster care program provides care and comfort for animals with special needs in private homes of our trained volunteer foster care providers. Once the kittens are old enough (usually 6-8 weeks) and weigh enough to be spayed or neutered (2 lbs), they return to the shelter for adoption. Call the shelter at (360) 733-2080 to inquire about available kittens. Please note that we do not place “holds” on animals until you’ve met them in person, even if you’ve filled out an application and expressed interest in a specific animal. This is because we want to ensure that each animal is a good fit for the interested party, and that the interested party is a good fit for the animal. We try to set each adoption up for success, for both the animals and for the people. The kittens would love to meet you! Do you feel the same? Please fill out an adoption application (here or at either shelter) and turn it in to Caitlyn Orr the foster care coordinator via email at foster@whatcomhumane.org, or fax it to 360.733.4746. Our adoption counselors will help you figure out if you're right for each other. Questions about foster kittens in general or other foster animals? Dog friends sitting together in the back of a car

A Friend for My Dog

An update on Tarzan (right), who is now named Mackie. He is the greatest addition and I’m so glad I found him. I’m also very grateful for the Whatcom Humane Society and all the hard work you do there. Mackie is now absolute best friends with my older pitbull Messy and is helping keep him young. They both go to work with me every day and my employer purchased a canopy for my truck so they can ride safely.

When I first got him he was pretty rough around the edges – but in a little over a month he has come so far. He’s an amazing dog and I’m so glad you guys helped him until his person came along. Since I adopted him I have learned a lot. I also discovered that buying a memory foam twin mattress is the best dog bed the world. Again, thank you guys so much for providing the hard work, dedication and love to all the animals that come through your doors.

Cat with a pink collar named Margo

We Named Her Margo

Hi! My mom and I adopted a cat from you guys in September. Her name was Shakira, I changed her name to Margo, after Margo in the book Paper Towns. She is such a great fit for me. I wanted a cat that would always be around me, be affectionate and sleep with me, that is exactly who she is. She follows my sleep schedule, at about 6:30am every morning she will wake me up, I absolutely love her!   She is very vocal. When I get home from school she’s normally in my room and starts meowing until I greet her. My mom told me while I was at school the second day we had her she was meowing for me until I came home. She was immediately attached to me. Her first night here we put her in a large crate to get her use to the surroundings and the next night she slept on my bed and has been ever since. She always sleeps on me or next to me. She’s such a funny girl. I love her personality. She is a very precious cat. I’m really glad I was able to adopt her. She is the perfect match for me.

Thank you Whatcom Humane Society!  -Brieanah, Rhonda and Margo.

A dog named Blue

A Dog Named Blue

Blue is a beautiful, rambunctious girl looking for a loving, active family to call her own! Blue is young and full of energy. She will require a lot of exercise, which would make her a perfect hiking or jogging buddy! Blue is working hard on her manners & learning a lot from the volunteers who work with her each day. She is still a puppy though, so she is a bit jumpy & mouthy as she feels her way through the world. She will require a home with no small children as she could accidentally knock them down. Blue would probably be too high energy for most cats, and she hasn’t done very well with other dogs at the shelter. She will be required to be signed up for positive reward based training with one of our approved trainers to help her adopters learn to guide and support her through her tough teenage years.

Think she’s a good fit?

We will be collecting applications for Blue and calling back the most appropriate homes to come in for a meet and greet.  If you think she would be a good fit for your home, please complete an adoption application today!
