ADOPT

Adopting a pet is one of the greatest gifts you can give, to the animal – and to yourself. Thank you for considering adoption from  Whatcom Humane Society.

Our interactive adoption process strives to place animals into permanent, responsible and loving homes. Our staff work with potential adopters to help choose the best match possible, both for the animal and the adopter. Prior to meeting an animal, potential adopters are asked to complete an adoption application to better help our staff understand what you are looking for in a companion animal. These applications remain on file for 6 months, so there is no need to complete an application each time you visit our domestic animal shelter. Adopters must complete an adoption application and be able to fulfill the adoption requirements necessary in order to be considered or approved for adoption.

Application forms for dogs and cats (Adobe Acrobat PDF files) may be downloaded below.

Hi, my name's Cosmo! Wanna cuddle? I am a total "people person" and want to be by your side pretty much all the time. My human friends tell me it can be a little obnoxious, but I can't help that I was born a social butterfly! If you are an active person who spends your time running, hiking, and exploring, I just might be your perfect copilot! I love other dogs, so much so that I can get a little frustrated if I'm attached to a leash and can't greet them instantly. I'll need my new family to help me work on my manners, both with humans and other dogs. Because I have super intelligence as well as an excess of energy, I could really benefit from some positive, reward based training classes! Depending on your experience with dogs like me, classes may or may not be required prior to adoption. I love to learn, and already know "sit" and "shake"- and I can't wait to add more cool tricks to my repertoire! When I picture my ideal home, I see a large fenced yard where I can stretch my legs and run around & play to my heart's content. I picture a home that's free of cats and small critters, so as not to get myself into any trouble! As for my family, I think the best fit would be adults, and perhaps some older kids who can tolerate being knocked down from time to time: again, I gotta work on those manners of mine-- but hey, I never claimed to be perfect! 🙂 If I sound like the vivacious adventure buddy you've been looking for, head up to the front desk for an application to meet me! See you soon!!

Meet Mandy! This gorgeous girl is searching for her furever home and is hoping that it will be with you! Mandy loves to do her own thing, but will still curl up in your lap at the end of the day. Because she needs her alone space sometimes she would do best in a home with children over 6. Mandy is confident enough to live with a respectful canine or feline companion. Mandy loves to play with toys and will talk your ear off the whole time. If you think you might be the right fit for Mandy stop by the front desk to meet her!

Is your house feeling a little quiet? Looking for a furry little companion to fill your days with adventure? Meet Duncan! This young man is sprightly, affectionate, and equipped with quite the voice! He's a talker through and through, so hopefully you're either into that sort of thing, or are willing to invest in some earplugs! If you've got 4 walls, a roof, and lots of time to spend petting this affection-hungry cat, you might just be his perfect home. Duncan would probably be okay living with another cat. The person who found Duncan reported that he actively tried to attack her dog on multiple occasions, so a home with no canine friends would be ideal! Respectful children should be okay as well, although he does seem to be a bit sensitive about his legs being touched. Any kids in the home should be supervised, especially at first, and able to read his body language when he's had enough playtime. Duncan really is just a great kitty and will make a wonderful buddy! If you're interested in meeting Duncan, head up to the front desk for an application!

-----CURRENTLY IN A FOSTER HOME----- Meet Frank! He is a delightful and loving little puppy! He is full of love and eager to be around his people. He does have typical puppy behaviors and is working on learning his manners. It will be required that he is signed up for positive reward-based puppy classes before his adoption is finalized to make sure he continues to be an amazing ambassador for bully breeds. He is a super quick learner and very attentive and eager to please. He loves playing with other dogs and is quickly learning how to be respectful when playing. Puppy socials and play dates would be great to keep him entertained and social. He would be fine living with dogs, cats, or kids as long as they are okay with his enthusiastic personality! He makes a great snuggler- if you don’t mind the snoring! This little dude is currently in foster care but we are accepting applications for him in the meantime!

Meet Suzie! She arrived at the shelter with his siblings, hissing and scared. After spending time in a caring foster home, she has come out of her shell! Now she loves playing with his siblings and would prefer to be adopted with one of them. They will keep each other entertained and get into less trouble. She will also be more confident living with a sibling. She enjoys climbing up and down her cat tree, and using the scratch posts. Cats can live 15-20 years, so she is looking for a long term commitment! She may do best in a home with older children, as sudden noises can scare her. If Suzie and one of her littermates sound like the perfect additions to your home, fill out an application at the front desk!

Meet Zed: A cool, confident cat who's ready to strut his way into your world! If Zed were a human, he'd probably be the high school quarterback with a bright red Camaro. All the guys would want to be him and all the ladies would want to be with him! Zed would likely do well in a variety of households, but he's not going to let just anyone ride shotgun in his sweet ride! He's looking for a family with a sense of humor who enjoys being talked at and rubbed up against. Must be okay with the occasional interrupted night of sleep should he decide that 3:00 AM is the perfect time to walk all over your face. Zed is a bold, social cat who would like lots of toys, windowsill access, and scratching posts to stretch his legs on. He responded very well to the faux dog during his behavior assessment, suggesting he might actually enjoy having a canine companion to hangout with! He might be able to live with another kitty too, if given a proper, slow introduction. He can live with older, respectful children. So, what do you say? Think you've got what it takes to be this cool dude's copilot? Head to the shelter for an application to meet him!

He would make a great dog for a retired person or somebody that works from home. He seems to enjoy the company of other similar sized dogs. A confident cat should be alright. Respectful children that understand dog body language and know to be gentle with older dogs should be okay with him. Westin has long legs that were made for walking and that's just what he'll do! He would love leisurely walks around the neighborhood or walks to the park. If you would like to spend some quality time getting to know Westin, please fill out an application so you can meet him!

Sweetie 11 month old single female. About Me: I love to exercise on a daily basis: long walks/hikes, running, sniffing for hidden treats. My favorite pastime is Baying very loudly. I have so much love to give; I'll likely jump on you and lick your face. I need to be signed up for positive reward based obedience classes. I cannot handle my excitement when around children and I end up accidentally knocking them over and hurting them so I'm looking for an adult only relationship. I can live with another dog but I want to meet them first to make sure we can get along. I have never seen a cat before but I think I would love to chase one so I will need a confident cat that will put me in my place. About You: Looking for someone who lives in a home with lots of space and a fenced yard. Doesn't give me to hard of a time when I Bay. Has lots of patience and is willing to work with me in a loving and positive way while I learn my manners. Loves to exercise with me! Will take me as a part of their family and provide for me the rest of my life. If you are interested in getting to know me please fill out an application so we can meet!

Hi I am Jarvis! Do you like having your faced licked by the most handsome man you have ever met? Well then I am the boy for you. I am a very nervous boy right now and I'm not sure how I feel about this shelter. Sometimes I get very excited and want to run around and play but then someone makes a loud noise and I'm not sure if I like that. I think I can live with another dog but I would like to meet them so I can decide how I feel about them. I don't want to live with cats, they are way too much fun to chase. Children seem very scary and I don't like the loud noises they make so I would like to have adults only please. I love to walk and sniff everything! I am a very intelligent boy and will need lots of outlets for my energy in order to stay the good boy that I am. I definitely have the headstrong Akita trait in my genes-- if I don't want to do something, chances are it's going to take a lot of convincing to get me to do it! Lucky for you, I'm a sucker for treats, and respond well to positive reinforcement, which will make your job a lot easier! Depending on your experience, I may need to be signed up for training classes before we can go home together. Life with me will be a big adventure, think you're up for it? Head to the shelter for an application to meet me!

Hi, my name is Lavender. I came to the shelter with my sister Matilda. We have spent the last two month in foster care because we were very nervous and needed to learn that humans weren’t as scary as we thought. But let me tell you, trusting a human is hard work and I need some extra help to not see humans as scary. Even though my foster parents worked really hard, I’m still a little nervous. I may not be the most cuddly of kittens but I promise I will brighten your day and I think I may slowly learn to love a good snuggle. Since I spent most of my life being raised as an indoor cat, I will be required to be an indoor only kitten as I have none of the lifesaving skills to survive outdoors. If you want to gain my heart, grab a wand toys and we came play for hours. Also food time, let me tell you, is great! Bring on the food and lets learn to love each other. I’m my sister’s protector and if you don’t have another friend for me to protect, I will be required to be adopted with my sister because I have a job I need to complete. I may be able to live with a very mellow dog that will not mess with me too much but it will take a lot of time to get comfortable. I think it would be best if I lived in a home with no young children (13 or over) as I am very skittish and will let you know it if pushed too far. It would also be best if my new home isn’t too busy and I am given the space I need to feel safe. If you are interested in meeting me, fill out an application and see if we are the perfect match!

This classy lady is Robin. The first thing you may notice about her is her big beautiful green eyes peering out from whatever she is hiding in. She came to us as a very scared stray and we gave her time to come out of her shell a bit. She will be a cat that takes a few months to get used to her new home. Robin will likely hide under the bed or couch for the first few weeks. She wants a family that will help her feel safe and secure. The shelter environment is too busy for her and she will do better once she gets to her forever home. She seems to enjoy pets and is realizing that people aren't so scary. She loves her face rubbed. Due to her timid nature she would not do well in a home with dogs or children. A home with another cat could help with her confidence though. Hey! I'm Nougat. My previous family didn't know much about how to care for bunnies so they brought me here to find a new home! I'm a little nervous around people but I'm sure you can win over my affection with treats. I'd love to grow up and be a house bunny! I already use my litter box so well and I love to explore. I can get a little scared when I am first picked up but after some soft pets I calm down a bit. I need a home with a nice roomy cage that I can call my own, also I need you to clean it daily since I don't have hands. I'd love a bunny friend! She will need daily handling to become more social and she'd probably enjoy a bunny friend (after the proper introduction has been done) Rabbit.org is a wonderful resource for all things bunny! Moose loves to play tug of war and he is a total foodie. He enjoys playing, running and belly rubs when he's tired out. Moose would do best in a home with no small critters, including cats. He seems to be alright with certain dogs and might be able to live with another canine companion but would do best as an only dog so that he can get the attention and training he so desperately needs. Moose would do best in a house with plenty of acreage to run on. If he isn't given plenty of physical and mental stimulation he will most likely become destructive and possibly run away to find his own adventures. Please fill out an application to meet Moose.

Pretty kitty is a sweet but timid cat looking for an adult only home or a home with older teenagers. Pretty kitty would prefer to be the queen of her castle and not live with any other cats. She might be able to live with a cat savvy dog but again would do best as an only child. Once she warms up to her people she is very affectionate. She was a good mouser and companion to her previous owner. Once she is out of the shelter and settled into her new environment she will be a lovely addition to somebody seeking a best furry friend. Please fill out an application at the front desk to meet Pretty Kitty.

Meet Barkley! This sweet boy is looking for an adult only home with husky/shepherd experience. Barkley needs a home with no cats but may be able to live with just the right dog. Depending on your experience we may require him to be signed up for positive reward based classes. Barkley loves to bark at you asking for attention. He needs plenty of physical and mental stimulation or he will likely become destructive or run off to find his own adventures. Vanilla came in with her brother Rosco and she is looking for a responsible, loving and permanent home. Vanilla is the more energetic and rambunctious of the two. She is more into rough playing rather than snuggling. She is very jumpy and mouthy and will need to be signed up for positive reward based classes to help her learn some much needed manners. She would do best in a home with respectful children over 12 years old. Another dog in the home would be great for Vanilla and any potential house mates will need to come in to ensure they will be a good mach. A no cat home would be best. This little lady is very energetic and will need plenty of physical and mental stimulation to keep her happy and healthy. If you are interested in Vanilla, please fill out an application at the front desk. We will be calling back the most appropriate homes to come in and meet her.

Meet Reggie! A super high energy dog looking for a very active home that can provide plenty of physical and mental stimulation. Without a proper outlet he will most likely become destructive and run away to find his own adventures. Reggie is very rambunctious and needs a lot of training. He will be required to be signed up for positive reward based classes to help him start off on the best paw. Respectful children 13 and older would be preferred as he has a lack of manners and has no concept of his ability to knock over or scratch people as he's jumping up on them. He needs to work on his leash manners as he likes to play tug of war with his leash. He would be to much for a cat and any dog in his new home will have to be just the right match as he doesn't have the best greeting manners. Reggie would make a great exercise buddy and with training an excellent companion. If you are up for the challenge of a dog that needs plenty of obedience and exercise then Reggie may be the dog for you.

He may have seniority and sometimes knows it, but, as soon as he knows he can't get away with calling the shots, he is a perfect, sweet and loving gentleman. Tonto has a very striking look about him with one unique eye. He never complains about it being dinner time or time to come into the barn and loves to be groomed. He will stand perfectly for hours if someone is brushing him! He prefers the company of mares and some other geldings. Meet Mimi! This gorgeous kitty is looking for a home that will love her for who she is! Mimi's former home surrendered her to us because she was scratching the carpet. Mimi would love it if her new home would invest in some extra cat scratchers in all sorts of varieties so she can have other options besides the carpet! Mimi is a typical sassy female cat who prefers love on her terms. When she's in the mood for pets, she is the biggest love bug, and will press all her weight into your hand to really get the full effect! When she's NOT in the mood for pets, she'll let you know-- she has perfected a pristine "Ice Queen" glare when she feels her boundaries have been crossed! Mimi would be a great companion for a retired person who's just looking for a buddy to share their space with. Mimi would love a nice sunny spot on the windowsill, or a tall cat tree she can perch upon to survey her kingdom. Mimi would prefer to be an only kitty but might be able to coexist with a laidback male cat if given a proper introduction. A dog that will leave her alone (or allow her to rule over!) might be okay. Mimi is a sweet, unique looking feline who's just waiting for her perfect match! If you think that could be you, head up to the front desk for an application to meet her!

We don't know much about Baby's history, but, she can be very skittish at first and appears to have zero personality when meeting someone new. As soon as she warms up, however, she is quite charming! She does need a home with the patience to move slowly around her - especially until she's comfortable. Haltering, grooming, leading makes her nervous until she's 100% confident there is no threat. Baby has been diagnosed with asthma but it seems to be situational. Something in the pasture is causing her to struggle with breathing, however, in the stall and paddocks she is perfectly fine. She will need medication for the rest of her life, but it is only given on an as needed basis, not an everyday dosage. She also has oddly formed feet so she is slightly prone to laminitis, but with the proper environment she is okay. Other than that, she is a pretty typical lovely horse. She just wants to eat treats and lay in the sand all day! Loves snuggles and head scratches! Approximately 12 years old. Gentle, intelligent, forgiving, & sweet mare. Meet Sid! He is looking for a responsible, loving and permanent home. He is a sweet older man who needs a home where he will get some regular exercise. Sid is known to be quite the Houdini and can escape if he's not given plenty of physical and mental stimulation. He would make a great walking companion but will not be too in to running. Sid would prefer a home that is experienced with the breed but he is really just looking for that forever home that will give him the love he deserves. He loves to shower your face with kisses. Sid would love to be the only dog in his new home but has lived with his litter mate in the past although he could be a bit pushy. He might be able to live with a confident cat that will put him in his place. He has not lived with small children so teenagers may be best for this older guy. He will need to be signed up for positive based obedience classes before his adoption can be finalized. If you think you are a good match for Sid, please fill out an application and you guys can go on a nice walk together.

Pete has been mainly kept out to pasture for the last few years, so they could use refreshers on his ground manners. He is sweet and friendly with people and other horses, and will come running from across the pasture when he sees you at the gate. Many questions can be answered by reading through the text below. Kindly read the information before contacting us. Please note: The picture above is a stock photo. Thank you for your interest in foster kittens! Kittens who are in our foster care program are generally kittens who arrived at the humane society as unweaned orphans , were still nursing, or were not old or big enough to be placed up for adoption. These kittens would not have survived in a stressful shelter environment. Our foster care program provides care and comfort for animals with special needs in private homes of our trained volunteer foster care providers. Once the kittens are old enough (usually 6-8 weeks) and weigh enough to be spayed or neutered (2 lbs), they return to the shelter for adoption. Call the shelter at (360) 733-2080 to inquire about available kittens. Please note that we do not place “holds” on animals until you’ve met them in person, even if you’ve filled out an application and expressed interest in a specific animal. This is because we want to ensure that each animal is a good fit for the interested party, and that the interested party is a good fit for the animal. We try to set each adoption up for success, for both the animals and for the people. The kittens would love to meet you! Do you feel the same? Please fill out an adoption application (here or at either shelter) and turn it in to Caitlyn Orr the foster care coordinator via email at foster@whatcomhumane.org, or fax it to 360.733.4746. Our adoption counselors will help you figure out if you're right for each other. Questions about foster kittens in general or other foster animals? Dog friends sitting together in the back of a car

A Friend for My Dog

An update on Tarzan (right), who is now named Mackie. He is the greatest addition and I’m so glad I found him. I’m also very grateful for the Whatcom Humane Society and all the hard work you do there. Mackie is now absolute best friends with my older pitbull Messy and is helping keep him young. They both go to work with me every day and my employer purchased a canopy for my truck so they can ride safely.

When I first got him he was pretty rough around the edges – but in a little over a month he has come so far. He’s an amazing dog and I’m so glad you guys helped him until his person came along. Since I adopted him I have learned a lot. I also discovered that buying a memory foam twin mattress is the best dog bed the world. Again, thank you guys so much for providing the hard work, dedication and love to all the animals that come through your doors.

Cat with a pink collar named Margo

We Named Her Margo

Hi! My mom and I adopted a cat from you guys in September. Her name was Shakira, I changed her name to Margo, after Margo in the book Paper Towns. She is such a great fit for me. I wanted a cat that would always be around me, be affectionate and sleep with me, that is exactly who she is. She follows my sleep schedule, at about 6:30am every morning she will wake me up, I absolutely love her!   She is very vocal. When I get home from school she’s normally in my room and starts meowing until I greet her. My mom told me while I was at school the second day we had her she was meowing for me until I came home. She was immediately attached to me. Her first night here we put her in a large crate to get her use to the surroundings and the next night she slept on my bed and has been ever since. She always sleeps on me or next to me. She’s such a funny girl. I love her personality. She is a very precious cat. I’m really glad I was able to adopt her. She is the perfect match for me.

Thank you Whatcom Humane Society!  -Brieanah, Rhonda and Margo.

A dog named Blue

A Dog Named Blue

Blue is a beautiful, rambunctious girl looking for a loving, active family to call her own! Blue is young and full of energy. She will require a lot of exercise, which would make her a perfect hiking or jogging buddy! Blue is working hard on her manners & learning a lot from the volunteers who work with her each day. She is still a puppy though, so she is a bit jumpy & mouthy as she feels her way through the world. She will require a home with no small children as she could accidentally knock them down. Blue would probably be too high energy for most cats, and she hasn’t done very well with other dogs at the shelter. She will be required to be signed up for positive reward based training with one of our approved trainers to help her adopters learn to guide and support her through her tough teenage years.

Think she’s a good fit?

We will be collecting applications for Blue and calling back the most appropriate homes to come in for a meet and greet.  If you think she would be a good fit for your home, please complete an adoption application today!
